Helium is a rare, non-renewable resource. Once the helium on earth is depleted, it will be gone forever.

Conserve

We can stop using helium for
wasteful purposes such as
party balloons!

Recycle

We can recycle helium used in airships, large parade displays and cryogenic applications.

Extract

Most helium is produced today by extracting it from natural gas. A helium content of at least 0.3 percent makes extraction feasible.

Store

Helium can be stored in natural geologic gas storage formations such as the Bush Dome reservoir in Amarillo, Texas where the National Helium Reservoir is located.

Federal regulations for ending the wasteful use of helium, the recycling of helium by larger users, extracting helium from natural gas and long term helium storage may be required.

Usage taxes on helium may be needed to discourage the wasting of helium and to pay for the regulation and long term storage of helium.
